Milwaukee’s Third Ward is home to fading ghost signs: hand-painted advertisements that once defined the city’s character but are now disappearing with time. The challenge was finding a way to preserve these signs before they were lost entirely, while making them accessible to a modern audience. Using archival references from the Milwaukee Public Library and the Wisconsin Historical Society. As one of the lead designers my role was to contribute directly by digitally recreating ghost signs with historical accuracy. I focused on detailed recreation of each lockup, ensuring that each sign retained its original personality in a modern digital format. The results led to 1,000 people taking the tour in the first month of going live. The work was also recognized on a national level, earning a spot on the One Show 2024 Awards Shortlist and winning Gold at United AdWorkers Milwaukee’s “The Ninety Nine” Awards.
